Over 100 activists from around the world gathered at Place des Nations, better known as the “Broken Chair” in front of the UN entrance and called for the rights of all migrants (regardless of status) to be recognized and respected in the Global Forum on Migration and Development deliberations. Chanting and cheering loudly, it was a sight to behold. All PGA participants were united in calling for the recognition of migrants rights in the GFMD, and this was vocalized throughout the rally with loud chants of “Migrants Rights are Human Rights!”.

Dec 3, 2011 Minneapolis, Minnesota — Amidst a snowstorm,...

Dec 3, 2011 Minneapolis, Minnesota — Amidst a snowstorm, grassroots activists came together for creative expression, food, a teach-in and music to be in solidarity with 1000 Durbans; and celebrate the release of the draft Twin Cities Peoples Agreement on Climate Change. The Twin Cities Peoples Agreement was inspired by Cochabamba, and developed through a series of community dialogs that were held in Minneapolis and St. Paul through the summer and fall of 2011. The evening was a connection of mind, body and spirit with a closing ceremony and round dance.

Washington DC-A delegation of US Tribal leaders facilitated by the Indigenous Environmental Network gathered together in Washington DC, during the third annual White House Tribal Leaders Summit to call on President Obama to reject a presidential permit for the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. The leaders presented President Obama with the “Mother Earth Accord” that outlines unique US Tribal and First Nations concerns over Keystone XL, Alberta Tar Sands, the heavy haul in Idaho and Montana, and presented a copy of the Academy Award Nominated Documentary film called “Pipe Dreams.”

On Dec 3, in solidarity with the 1000 Durban, we built up community resilience as we doubled the raised beds at a community farm in East Oakland. Marching from Union Station to City Hall, they called upon the Mayor and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to stop the 710 Freeway expansion, and instead expand public transportation. The Busriders Union’s Judi Redman broke down how bus service cuts stink for bus riders and stink for the planet, with a degraded transit system forcing a lot of folks to put polluting cars back on the road. Bill Gallegos of Communities for a Better Environment drove home the need for our society to leave behind an economic and political system that prioritizes corporate profits over human health and the environment. The Labor Community Strategy Center/Busriders Union (BRU), Communities for a Better Environment (CBE), Eastyard Communities for Environmental Justice (EYCEJ) and Physicians for Social Responsibility Los Angeles (PSR-LA) joined forces to organize the action.

This is a photo of East Michigan Environmental Action...

This is a photo of East Michigan Environmental Action Council’s youth leadership team..supporting 1000 Durbans. EMEAC held a conversation with 15 members and supporters of the Young Educator’s Alliance, its youth leadership group. Youth leader Siwatu-Salama Ra began the conversation by asking participants what they thought of when they hear the words “climate change.” One youth shared that the seasons seem out of whack… like the summers are more hot and the winters are much colder than they used to be. Siwatu then moved into a presentation on examples of climate change around the U.S. and throughout the world. The north pole, for example is now showing grass and glaciers are melting. Although a lot of work is needed to slow the warming of the planet, one thing that we as individuals can do is to recycle. This was a solution offered by one of the teens and agreed to by the rest.

Mother Earth Achieves a Victory Today with Obama Administration...

Mother Earth Achieves a Victory Today with Obama Administration Decision to Delay the Keystone XL Pipeline Decision

Tom B.K. Goldtooth, Indigenous Environmental Network says:

“The position taken by the Obama administration today to delay the permit for the Trans Canada Keystone XL pipeline in order to do a new environmental review is the right decision – an ethical decision. We applaud President Obama and the State Department for listening to the voices of youth, elders, faith-based groups, labor, students, environmental organizations, Native Nations, and those living along the proposed pipeline, who are standing united against dirty oil from the tar sands. This is the beginning of a new era in which people are demanding that their rights be recognized. The need to protect our sources of clean water, to fight for stabilizing climate change, and to say “No” to corporate polluters setting the agenda in Washington is now. We must not let up. The struggle for environmental and economic justice - for energy and climate justice - and the fight for Native Treaty Rights must continue. Mother Earth has achieved victory today.”

On Sunday, October 23rd, over 40 people attended a street teach-in at #Occupy Wall Street on participatory budgeting (PB) co-facilitated by Vincent Villano of Community Voices Heard (CVH) and Josh Lerner of Participatory Budgeting Project (PBP). The police tried to clear teach-in participants from that area at 5:45pm. While the police argued with the #OWS organizer who was helping set up the teach-in by holding a big cardboard sign that read “Participatory Budgeting Teach-In” Vincent had everyone circle up so the teach-in could begin.

So, the teach-in participants claimed control of the public space in order to hold a teach-in about public control over public money. Four NYC Council Members have agreed to allow the community members of their District to decide how $1million of their capital discretionary funds will be spent in this coming fiscal cycle. CVH is the lead engagement organization for this pilot project.

Lots of questions were answered about PB and participants said they enjoyed the level of details they learned about the pilot project. In the end, we generated a lot more interest and discussion about the PB pilot project in NYC (PBNYC) and it is also to our understanding that more #OWS organizers and participants are considering the use of PB as a way to decide how to spend the occupation’s funds. The teach-in was sponsored by the #OWS Alternative Economics Work Group and received support from the #OWS Education and Empowerment Work Group. The connections that are being made between PB processes and the inner-workings of #OWS can contribute to the development of an economy built upon solidarity and meeting human needs. Build the Peoples’ Economy!

The campaign is working to educate the community about Wal-Mart’s record of worker exploitation and negative impact on communities and to demand that no Wal-Mart store open in DC without an enforceable Community Benefits Agreement that ensures workers and communities benefit.

On Thursday October 21, DC Jobs with Justice along with Respect DC and members of the Occupy K Street DC encampment led an action to swarm union station and shame the chairman of Wal-Mart Rob Walton as he gave a speech at a $1,000 a plate dinner. Protestors did a banner drop stating “Stop putting Profits over People” and released a pack of balloons that floated to the ceiling of the union station atrium displaying a sign reading “We are the 99%”.
